SMEMR LECTURERS AND STUDENTS BRING MORE GLORY TO USM

PENANG, 1 August 2012 - Lecturers and students of School of Materials Engineering and Mineral Resources (SMEMR), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), won several major awards in the Materials Lecture Competition 2012 and IMM Green Materials Award 2012 in Kuala Lumpur recently .

The competition, organised by the Institute of Materials Malaysia (IMM), was held in conjunction with the 8th International Materials Technology Conference and Exhibition (IMTCE2012).

Prof. Hanafi Ismail was chosen to receive the 2012 Green Materials Award by IMM basing on the excellence of his sustainable products known as Environmental Friendly Biodegradable Plastics and Non-Hazardous Materials.

He took home a trophy and a certificate of appreciation which was presented by IMM President Prof. Dr Mohd Kamal Harun.

Meanwhile, two SMEMR students, Mohamed Shafiq and Muhammad Danial Ghaddafy Affendy, represented the undergraduate students and graduates in The Materials Lecture Competition 2012 competition after winning their respective categories.

Winning the first prize enabled them to walk away with a cash prize of RM 1,000, a trophy and a certificate of appreciation.

The competition is IMM’s initiative which aims to raise awareness among young engineers and scientists on the importance of innovation and green technologies and their impact on the environment.

This competition is open to students from various local universities and institutions of higher learning, where the participants are required to give a lecture pertaining to issues regarding development, innovation, use and recycling of materials.
