PENANG, AUGUST 14, 2012 - About 100 participants of the Tadarus dan Khatam Al-Quran Perdana ceremony successfully completed their recitation of the Al-Quran held at the Masjid al-Malik Khalid, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) here last night.

This event, organised by the Activities Implementation Committee for Ramadan 1433 and assisted by volunteers from the university and surrounding community, is aimed at receiving the divine blessings and earning some additional grace from God during the holy month of Ramadan.

The Senior Assistant Director of USM Islamic Centre, Ustad Mohd. Zamrus Mohd. Ali said the tadarus ceremony which started three weeks ago since the beginning of Ramadan, saw participants took turns to recite the Al-Quran and reviewed by other group members.

He said the men’s group was led by Omar Othman, a staff at the Centre for Knowledge, Communication and Technology (PPKT) while the women's group was led by Mariah Joseph, a USM retiree.

“Voluntary participation among the university community and outside community is very much appreciated. This includes participation from various levels of staff and student categories, including the public.

“All who took part showed real determination and the organisers would like to thank the department heads for their support in allowing their staff time off to participate in this spiritual programme,'' he said.

He added that due to the overwhelming response, this programme will be continued next year and the organisers hope that it will attract more participation from the campus community as well as the surrounding community.

The ceremony ended with the presentation of certificates and souvenirs to the participants and the recitation of khatam Al-Quran prayers led by al-Fadil Ustaz Latiffi Mohammad from the Engineering Campus Islamic Centre. - Translation: Tan Ewe Hoe
