9 USM SCIENTISTS RECOGNISED AS “TOP RESEARCH SCIENTISTS MALAYSIA”

PULAU PINANG, 25 November – Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Professor Asma Haji Ismail were among 9 scientists from this University who were selected as part of the list of 27 Top Research Scientists Malaysia issued by the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM).
Apart from Asma, the other USM recipients were the Research Dean of the Engineering and Technology Research Platform Professor Zainal Ariffin Mohd Ishak, the Research Dean of the Fundamental Science Research Platform Professor Abdul Latif Ahmad, the Dean of the School of Civil Engineering Professor Hamidi Abdul Aziz and the Director of Sains@USM Professor Abdul Rahman Mohamed.
Also receiving the same recognition were the Deputy Dean of the School of Materials and Mineral Resources Professor Hanafi Ismail, the Deputy Director of the Institute for Research in Molecular Medicine Professor Rahmah Noordin, the Deputy Dean of the School of Chemical Engineering Associate Professor Lee Keat Teong and a professor at the School of Biological Sciences Professor Lee Chow Yang.

The Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Professor Dato’ Omar Osman expressed his happiness and gratitude for the recognition received by the USM scientists who accepted the awards from the former Prime Minister, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in a ceremony held in Kuala Lumpur.
Professor Norazmi Mohd Nor from the School of Health Sciences and Professor Hanafi Ismail were also appointed ASM Fellows.
"I would like to congratulate all of our scientists who receive this recognition and hope that it will serve as an impetus for them to continue to pursue excellence while striving also to help produce more leading scientists from USM to contribute not only to the university, but also the nation and the world," said Omar.
He added that, while taking pride of the success and recognition, we expect that the existing expertise can also be utilized by the community through various community engagement activities, creating knowledge and innovation to showcase the great talent in our country.
