PENANG, 27 Nov. 2012 - Professor Dr. Abdul Rahman Mohamed from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) was announced as the Grand Prize winner of the Science and Technology Award from Malaysia Toray Science Foundation (MTSF) in a special prize-giving ceremony held in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
Rahman, who is also the director of SAINS@USM, won a cash prize of RM30,000 and a certificate of appreciation presented by Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Datuk Fadillah Yusof.
Rahman said that the award was given based on several key criteria that demonstrated achievement, excellence and continual contributions in the field of scientific research.
He said it also covers the results obtained through new discoveries, research, publications, and successful bilateral relationships with strategic partners at the international level.
“This success is the success of the university and I am happy to contribute something to the world of research and the university as a whole.
“It also hopes to infuse passion into all researchers, particularly in USM to develop high impact research and studies for the economic and socio-cultural development of the community,” he said.
He added that his achievement was based more specifically through the evaluation of his nanotechnology research that is now proven to have important benefits in the manufacturing industry. This research also won him numerous accolades both locally and internationally.
In the meantime, MTSF award presentation ceremony was organised annually with the objective to give recognition and encouragement to researchers in Malaysia to improve the performance of science and technology.
Other awards presented were Science and Technology Research Grants (Public/Private Higher Education Institutions) and Science Education Awards which saw the presentation of prizes to outstanding recipients at the school level.
