KUALA LUMPUR, 4 Dec 2012 - Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) today signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Islamic University of Gaza (IUG) to collaborate in establishing the Gaza Education Fund.

USM had collected more than RM100,000 in less than one-week period through the contribution of USM undergraduates and staff via payroll deductions.

"Through this MoU, we want to ensure that the Palestinian children's education development efforts are maintained and will be carried out continuously with the help of the universities there," said USM Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato' Omar Osman.

Among other things, this MoU also intends to help USM in carrying out some social programmes and management of a community centre in Gaza, assist in education and human resource development programmes (capacity building).

“We will also work together on programmes of mutual interest such as the development of nano technology, solar technology and LED as well as conducting beneficial collaborative research particularly to assist in the development of Gaza.

Omar signed the MoU on behalf of USM while UIG was represented by its President, Dr. Kamalain K. Shaa’ath.

"USM will continue to assist in the development of Palestinian people and I’m grateful of the commitment shown by USM community especially the enthusiasm of the undergraduates in coordinating and carrying out the volunteer work, including participating in the mission to Gaza on 5 – 12 December 2012," said Omar. - TEXT: Mohammad bin Abdullah / TRANSLATION: Tan Ewe Hoe
