MIT-GT 2012 – USM EXCELS IN CULTURAL AWARD
PERLIS, 5 December 2012 – It was a proud moment for Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) when it bagged two Cultural awards in the 2012 MIT-GT Varsity Carnival which concluded yesterday by defeating 10 other competing institutes of higher learning from three countries.
USM won two out of three Cultural Awards in the tournament namely 'The Best Team Spirit Award' and 'The Best Academic and Presentation Award’.
The evaluation of results was made by the professional judges from universities of all the three countries, namely Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia.
According to Zulkifli Ishak, the Contingent Leader for the USM cultural student groups, the evaluation was made based on various aspects particularly in the aspects of discipline, commitment, ethics, etc.
"The Best Team Spirit Award is an award based on students’ discipline throughout the tournament and seminars, the spirit of cooperation among students and the commitment of the students in any given responsibility. We are glad to have won this award," he said this after the closing ceremony of the 14th IMT-GT Varsity Carnival in Harumanis Hall, Politeknik Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin, Pauh, Perlis.
Commenting on the second award The Best Academic and Presentation Award, Zulkifli said that the USM students showcased the Sarawak Iban culture, the unique lives of this ethnic group from the start of history until the present civilisation.
He said that this was a very meaningful success for the USM cultural groups that participated in this IMT-GT and he hopes that the students can retain the title when they compete in the next edition to be held in the Prince of Songkhla University, Thailand next year.
Also present to officiate the closing ceremony were Prof. Dr. Hj Khudzir Hj Ismail, the Rector of Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Arau, Perlis and Prof. Adnan Hussein, the President of the 2012 IMT-GT Varsity Carnival.
Besides that, in the sports events - volleyball, badminton, tennis and football, USM managed to bag 1 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze.
The gold medal was won through the Women’s Badminton event, silver medal was won by the Women's Tennis team and the bronze through the Men's Badminton team.
