PENANG, 13 Feb. 2012 – The Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) community is urged to be committed to their daily tasks to ensure the quality and delivery of its administrative governance achieves a six-star excellent rating.
USM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato’ Omar Osman said that the university had been given a range of responsibilities by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) to lead, including two new responsibilities: leading a pilot programme involving industry engagement networking and another programme on sustainability.
He then added that staff should always bear a sense of responsibility towards their duties and that it requires the cooperation of all staff including those in the various levels of university administration.
“To be at six-star ranking, we need to perform more than the norm, or in other words, we have to show excellence in our daily work,” he said.
He said this at the Vice-Chancellor’s First Monthly Gathering in 2013 with the Chancellory’s staff at the Chancellory Building here today.
He added that the campus community also need to resolve to excel with distinction in executing the trust, proving to oneself that one can serve as a model to others even if one is just a support staff.

In the meantime, the newly appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation, Prof. Muhamad Jantan, said that he needed the cooperation and support of the whole campus community, particularly those from the Chancellory to help him in undertaking the trust.
Muhamad Jantan said he also hopes to meet his obligations as best as possible as a leader in innovation and research, and lead with fairness and impartiality at all times.

“I’ve been entrusted with a huge responsibility and a heavy burden, but with the trust and confidence of all, I believe the task can be carried out in the best possible way. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the university for the trust given,” he said.
