PENANG, July 16, 2012 - Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah as the Commandant General PALAPES, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), has consented to award the Honorary Colonel Commissioner to the Vice-Chancellor (VC), Professor Dato’ Omar Osman, effective June 28, 2012.

The award was bestowed on the VC by the Chief of the Armed Forces, General Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Panglima Zulkifli Zainal Abidin in a special ceremony held here recently which also saw the award of the same rank given to the VC of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Prof. Dato' Dr. Zakaria Kasa.

Also present at the ceremony were the Chief of 2nd Division, Major General Dato’ Azizan Md. Delin, key officers of the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) and representatives from both universities.

Zulkifli said in his speech that USM is deemed as a university that is very significant in making important discoveries that will give positive impact on the development of higher education in the country.

He said the commissioning of the VC rank is seen as a network that can assure the continuation of collaboration between the MAF and PALAPES throughout higher education institutions in Malaysia.

“We would like to ask the university authorities to join us in re-watching the development of PALAPES so that this body can remain dynamic and competitive. This is because even though PALAPES has long existed, it has not stood at the highest level,” he said.

He said the university hopes to add value and increase its efforts in providing a new platform for the existence of PALAPES in higher education institutions, thus putting the body of co-curricular activities to a level that is different from other organisations.

“A lot of that can be used in MAF platform to improve taxonomy and pedagogies to benefit PALAPES development and we will continually strive to improve the achievement of the body to the desired level,” he said.
