U.N. Approves Long-Awaited New Women's Agency

UNITED NATIONS, Sep 14 (IPS) - After more than three years of political foot-dragging, the 192-member General Assembly adopted a historic resolution Monday aimed at creating a new U.N. agency for women.

The main thrust of KANITA is to achieve excellence in the field of research on women and gender in the development process. KANITA is a research centre set up by the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). While our associates comprise mainly of full-time academic staff of USM, KANITA also welcomes the participation of a large number of concerned scholars and social activists who are not necessarily university-based into its activities. KANITA is also committed to offering high quality graduate studies in the field of gender studies. It welcomes all enquiries and suitably qualified applicants into its graduate programme. This website will strive to provide most of the information on the centre, its work, profile of associates, requirements for graduate applications, publications, research notes, and seminar series, talks and discussions that are held under the centre’s auspices.

INTERNATIONAL CEDAW CONFERENCE
11 November 2009

2009 marks the 30th anniversary of CEDAW (Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women ), the Global Bill of Rights for Women. KANITA believes that the principles set out in CEDAW remain as relevant today as they did 30 years ago and governments around the world including Malaysia should ensure that the commitments set out in this key human rights instrument are implemented swiftly and in full, and withdraw the remaining reservations.

ASIA PACIFIC NGO FORUM ON BEIJING +15
Next year 2010 will be the 15th year of the Beijing Platform for Action (BPFA). As has been the tradition, Asia-Pacific Women’s Watch (APWW) will convene the Asia-Pacific NGO Forum on Beijing + 15. It will take place on 22-24 October 2009 in Manila, Philippines. Miriam College, a private educational institution for women, will host the event. UNIFEM in New York has pledged partial financial support.
