Health Outreach Programmes: Reaching Local Communities, Disadvantaged Populations and Refugees
Health outreach programmes are a key pillar in promoting well-being within local communities. At Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), initiatives like Baktisiswa Penaga 2023 exemplify efforts to enhance healthcare awareness in these areas. Organized by the Persatuan Sains Farmasi and the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, this annual event involved students and community members in activities such as health screenings, halal awareness talks, and educational games for children. Held in collaboration with Sekolah Kebangsaan Permatang Janggus and Masjid Jamek Kota Aur, the programme also provided donations of essential goods to those in need. These outreach efforts demonstrate the university’s commitment to enriching the health and knowledge of local populations while fostering strong community relationships.
USM also focuses on supporting disadvantaged populations, particularly those in remote areas with limited healthcare access. One notable initiative is a programme designed to train Orang Asli volunteers in first aid, including CPR, wound care, and basic health management. This project, led by the Emergency Medicine Department, aims to create local caregivers among the Orang Asli community in Pos Balar, Gua Musang, addressing the challenge of geographical isolation and long travel times to medical facilities. By equipping the Orang Asli with essential healthcare knowledge, the programme empowers the community to manage health emergencies while waiting for professional medical help to arrive.
In addition to local and disadvantaged groups, USM extends its outreach to refugee communities, with a particular focus on Rohingya refugee children. In collaboration with the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, USM conducted a Women’s Health Program in November 2023 at the Rohingya Education Center in Bukit Mertajam. This initiative provided health education to over 40 Rohingya children, helping them prepare for adolescence while offering guidance on key health topics. The programme reflects USM’s dedication to improving health literacy and building resilience within refugee communities, ensuring that these young individuals receive the support they need to thrive.
