USM Actively Promotes Conscious Water Usage in the Wider Community
Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) actively promotes conscious water usage in the wider community through educational outreach and practical engagement activities. A notable initiative in 2023 was a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) event held in collaboration with Xylem South East Asia (Xylem SEA), where Dr. Chee Su Yin, a representative of USM’s Centre for Global Sustainability Studies (CGSS) and EXCO of Water Watch Penang (WWP), participated.
The event, conducted at Penang Free School, involved over 20 Form 3 students in a hands-on session to assess water quality. Students tested different water sources—rainwater, river water, tap water, and soap water—using key parameters such as pH, dissolved oxygen, and ammonia levels. These activities fostered awareness of the importance of water quality in everyday life, helping students understand the impacts of polluted water and promoting responsible water usage practices.
Further, USM’s involvement extends beyond these events to broader community efforts, such as the "Nature-based Solutions (NbS): Bridging the Knowledge Gap" workshop in 2023, where Dr. Chee Su Yin delivered a keynote on nature-based solutions for flood risk mitigation in Malaysia’s coastal and marine environments. This workshop included collaboration with experts from Jabatan Pengairan dan Saliran (JPS) and Wetlands International-Malaysia, reinforcing USM’s commitment to promoting sustainable water management and conscious water usage on both local and national scales.
Through these educational and practical initiatives in 2023, USM continues to lead efforts to actively promote conscious water usage, ensuring that communities are equipped with the knowledge to protect and sustain their water resources.
