USM Actively Provides FREE Educational Opportunities for Local Communities about Good Water Management
Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) is committed to fostering awareness and understanding of good water management practices through various FREE educational programs aimed at local communities. By organizing interactive and engaging activities, USM creates valuable learning opportunities for students and the wider public, focusing on the importance of water conservation and responsible water usage.
One notable initiative is the Students Explore Aquatic Sciences (SEAS) Camp 2023, led by Dr. Chee Su Yin. This camp welcomed primary school students to USM, providing them with hands-on experiences in water science. Activities included testing the pH levels of drinking water and learning about the effects of microplastics on the environment. Students were guided by USM staff, interns from the Centre for Global Sustainability Studies (CGSS), and Water Watch Penang, emphasizing the importance of sustainable water practices.
Additionally, in 2023, USM actively collaborates with schools through programs like the Negalitres for Schools - STEM Water Education Programme, held at SMK St. Xavier. In partnership with Water Watch Penang, the American Chemical Society USM Student Chapter (ACS USM), and other organizations, this program educated students on water conservation, water-saving technologies, and the treatment of water pollution. The program featured a mix of awareness talks and hands-on learning sessions, empowering students to take action both at school and at home.
Through these educational initiatives, USM ensures that local communities, especially young learners, are equipped with the knowledge and tools needed to practice good water management and contribute to sustainable water usage.
