International Collaboration on Data Gathering for SDG Achievement and Water Security

Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) actively engages in water security initiatives through cooperation at local, regional, national, and global levels. These collaborations ensure that USM contributes to sustainable water management and security efforts in line with its mission to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 6.

Local Cooperation: USM's River Engineering and Urban Drainage Research Centre (REDAC) plays a pivotal role in local initiatives, such as organizing the "World Soil & Water Day Webinar" in December 2023. This webinar focuses on sustainable soil and water management as essential components of food security, providing a platform for experts to share their knowledge with local participants.

Regional Cooperation: On a regional level, USM has been awarded the prestigious UNESCO Chair on Ecohydraulics for Sustainable Water Infrastructures for 2023. This program focuses on improving water security and infrastructure management across Asia and the Pacific, addressing critical issues such as climate risk management, disaster risk reduction, and clean water access for over 663 million people. This initiative allows USM to lead research and collaborations on sustainable water resources in the region.

National Cooperation: At the national level, REDAC USM participated in the 30th Anniversary of the UNESCO-IHP Regional Steering Committee for Asia and the Pacific and the Water Resources Forum held in Putrajaya in November 2023. This event brought together professionals and government agencies to discuss water security challenges, promoting collective knowledge and innovative approaches for a sustainable water future in Malaysia.

Global Cooperation: USM also extends its expertise globally, such as when lecturers from REDAC were invited by the Applied Science Private University in Jordan to speak on Water Security in Sustainable Development in March 2023. This event highlights USM’s role in addressing water security on a global stage, contributing to international discourse on sustainable water management.

Through these local, regional, national, and global collaborations, USM strengthens its commitment to achieving sustainable water security and supports the implementation of integrated water management practices.
