University Provides Free Access to Facilities for Local Farmers: Pepper and Belacan Scale-Up Projects

Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) is a well-known research university that actively conducts research and creates innovations to benefit both knowledge advancement and society. Several of these innovations have greatly helped local farmers, growers, and food producers across Malaysia, making their work more efficient and sustainable.

One notable example is the Pepper Scale-Up Project, led by Professor Dr. Rosnah. In this project, a machine called the Pepper-O-Matic was designed to help pepper farmers reduce the time needed for processing. Traditionally, farmers had to soak harvested pepper for up to 25 days before the next step, known as "rubbing," could begin. However, with the Pepper-O-Matic machine, the soaking process is shortened to just 8 days, saving farmers more than 2 weeks of time. This innovation makes pepper farming faster and more efficient.

Another successful project benefiting local food producers is the Belacan (Shrimp Paste) Scale-Up Project, led by Associate Professor Dr. Fazilah. In this project, a Belacan Forming & Cutting Machine was developed to improve the handling and compressing during the belacan production process. This technology was created specifically to support small-scale producers in Sabah, helping them handle their products more easily and hygienically.

USM is committed to ensuring that the technologies developed by its researchers are made available to local farmers and food producers. These efforts directly support the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG2): Zero Hunger, by improving food production processes and supporting sustainable agriculture.
