Improving Wellbeing through Health Collaborations
University collaborations with health institutions can enhance health and wellbeing activities through a variety of initiatives. Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has been known for its involvement in many collaborative activities with local, national and international health institutions.
Among the activities include research partnerships, in which joint research projects can explore public health issues, wellness programs, and innovative healthcare solutions. USM partners with hospitals and clinics to provide students with hands-on experience in real-world health settings. Collaborative community health programs can focus on specific health challenges within the community, such as nutrition education, mental health support, or chronic disease management. Hosting joint workshops and seminars can foster knowledge exchange on health topics. Organizing health fairs in collaboration with local health institutions can offer free screenings, health education, and resources to the community, while providing students with outreach experience. Jointly developing wellness initiatives, such as fitness classes, mental health workshops, or stress reduction programs, can enhance overall wellbeing for both students and the community.
CAKNASTROK is a collaborative project involving Universiti Sains Malaysia, the Ministry of Health and other institutions, which aims to assess the feasibility and acceptability of a culturally tailored intervention to improve caregivers' skills in managing the physical and psychological needs of stroke patients and their own needs.
This collaborative effort involves local institution, Hospital RajaPerempuan Zainab II Kota Bharu, to help with the support system and education of stroke patients caregivers in Kelantan. In addition, national collaborators from Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah Kuala Terengganu expand coverage of the activities to the patients in the state of Terengganu. CAKNASTROK project also involves global collaborators from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) United Kingdom.
CAKNASTROK educational website has been developed and introduced to the caregivers in the participating hospitals and communities, through which caregivers can obtain information and guidelines on proper nursing and management of stroke patients at home. CaknaStrokApp a software application developed from this collaborative effort enables caregivers of stroke patients to access salient information through mobile devices.
By fostering such collaborations, USM plays a crucial role in advancing public health and improving community wellbeing.
