Preserving Cultural Heritage: A Commitment to Intangible Traditions
In an era of rapid globalization, the preservation of cultural heritage has become increasingly vital. This commitment extends beyond tangible artifacts to encompass intangible aspects of culture, such as local folklore, traditions, language, and communal knowledge. At Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), efforts to deliver projects aimed at recording and preserving these elements are essential for safeguarding the identities of communities, including those of displaced populations. By focusing on local folklore, traditions, language, and communal knowledge, USM plays a crucial role in maintaining the cultural heritage that enriches our society.
Local Cultural Heritage Initiatives
In 2023, several events exemplified the dedication to local cultural heritage. One notable performance, Panggung Semar: Geliga Embun, presented by Dewan Budaya USM, and Arjuna Sukma Academy in conjunction with the George Town Festival 2023, drew significant attention. This extraordinary showcase featured traditional art forms, including Mak Yong, Wayang Kulit, and Dikir Barat, bringing together performers and audiences in a celebration of Malaysia's vibrant cultural tapestry. The event highlighted the richness of local traditions and fostered a sense of community pride and connection.
Regional Cultural Exchange
The International Cultural Exchange between Malaysia and Thailand, which took place from August 30 to September 2, 2023, at Dewan Budaya USM, highlighted the importance of understanding and appreciating regional cultures. This event fostered connections between the two countries, promoting cultural sharing that strengthens cooperation and enriches the cultural landscape of both nations. Such exchanges are vital in preserving the unique heritages that define communities.
National Celebrations of Heritage
On October 18, 2023, the Perkampungan Budaya: Bahtera Madani showcased Malaysia’s diverse cultural expressions at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). Nearly 3,000 attendees experienced a night filled with performances, including a musical theatre adaptation based on the poetry of A. Aziz Deraman. This event not only celebrated national heritage but also emphasized the collaboration of various institutions in producing a dynamic representation of Malaysian culture.
The culmination of the Bahtera Madani program, which ran from October 15 to 19, was marked by the presentation of the Malaysia Madani Icon Award to participants who contributed to the project. Such recognitions help highlight the importance of cultural initiatives in promoting unity and understanding among different communities.
Heritage of Displaced Communities
Efforts to record and preserve intangible cultural heritage are particularly crucial for displaced communities, who often face the loss of their cultural identity. By documenting their folklore, traditions, and languages, we can ensure that these communities retain a connection to their roots. Initiatives like oral history projects and community workshops play a significant role in empowering these groups, allowing their voices to be heard and their stories to be told.
The events of 2023 highlight a collective effort to preserve cultural heritage at all levels. By recording and safeguarding intangible elements, we honor the past and build a foundation for future generations. USM has actively contributed to this mission through programs that protect traditional practices and knowledge, ensuring cultural sustainability in collaboration with local communities.
