CEMACS, USM Collaborate with the Local Community in Efforts to Maintain Shared Aquatic Ecosystems
Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), through its Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies (CEMACS), plays a vital role in maintaining and protecting shared aquatic ecosystems in Penang by actively collaborating with local communities and government agencies. Recognizing the significance of marine and coastal environments in promoting biodiversity, food security, and climate resilience, USM and CEMACS have established various programs centered on sustainable aquatic management and community engagement.
A notable initiative involves USM’s partnership with the Penang State Government to designate Middle Bank, a significant seagrass bed near Penang Island, as a marine conservation area. This collaboration emphasizes the importance of seagrass ecosystems as carbon sinks and critical habitats for marine biodiversity. Through community involvement, CEMACS raises awareness and garners support for this conservation effort, benefiting both marine life and local fisheries, thereby enhancing ecosystem resilience and supporting local livelihoods.
In addition to conservation, CEMACS has engaged in long-term environmental monitoring programs for over 20 years, collecting valuable data on seagrass health and marine biodiversity in Penang’s waters. These efforts include educational programs for local schools, providing students with hands-on learning experiences that encourage a deeper understanding of coastal conservation and its importance.
USM also partners with international institutions and community stakeholders to address the impacts of climate change on coastal areas, focusing on issues such as sea-level rise, ocean acidification, and marine pollution. By aligning with local policies and actively involving the community, these collaborations aim to create resilient, sustainable aquatic ecosystems that serve both the environment and local communities, preserving Penang’s natural heritage for future generations.
Moreover, CEMACS has contributed to the development of the Penang Green Agenda, advocating for the establishment of Marine Conservation Areas (MCAs) around Penang's coastline in accordance with Malaysia's National Biological Diversity Policy. Suggested sites include Middle Bank, Pulau Gazumbo, and Pulau Kendi—each rich in marine biodiversity and essential for conservation. The proximity of these areas to George Town's UNESCO World Heritage site also presents opportunities for sustainable ecotourism that aligns with conservation goals.
With its reputable expertise, USM is frequently sought after for advisory roles, underscoring its commitment to maintaining the health and sustainability of shared aquatic ecosystems through collaboration with the local community and government.Read More..
