  • Sustainable Commuting

    As a sustainable-led university, USM provides a number of sustainability commuting facilities within its compound such as E-Bike, Beam scooter, free bicycle parking, cycle tracks, covered walkway, pedestrian walkway and shuttle buses in campus. This is to accommodate the USM community and reduce the need for commuting using vehicles such as car and motorcycle, which in turn would help to reduce the amount of carbon footprints. In addition, the sustainable commuting facilities offered by USM is considering the user with disabilities.

    At USM, we're all about putting pedestrians at the forefront of our campus design. From bustling sidewalks to well-marked crosswalks and inviting pedestrian zones, we've created an environment where people are in constant communion with their surroundings. We recognize the pivotal role pedestrian safety plays in shaping a sustainable and vibrant university campus. By prioritizing pedestrian access, we're not just ensuring safety – we're nurturing a culture of physical activity, reducing our carbon footprint, and building a tight-knit community.   • More Than a Campus: Your Affordable Home

    1. Affordable Housing for Employees

    USM offers housing options for on-call officers, including hostel officers and technical staff working on campus. In addition, USM provides affordable house rentals ranging from RM 200 to RM 350, significantly lower than market prices. Furthermore, USM offers financial aid on basic necessity to eligible staff.

    2. Affordable Housing for Students

    USM hostels in campus (Desasiswa) are affordable ranging from about RM5.00 - RM6.00 per day per person. The Desasiswa are equipped with basic facilities and services such as cafeterias, laundry and shops. Bus services are also available from hostels to lecture halls and other parts of the university.

    University provide special accommodation for disabled students at Desasiswa Aman Damai.

    Student from poor families (B40 group) listed under the e-Kasih program will be given discount on the room rental rates.

  • Bringing the University to Your Home

    The university has become more flexible with working hours, allowing staff to 'Work From Home' and implementing a clock-in system called 'Sistem Kehadiran Kerja Fleksi.' Additionally, the university provides teleconferencing tools as below to promote telecommuting among its staff.

  • Green Building, Brighter Future

    Sustainable Building 

    USM Sustainability Action Plan target:

    • By 2030, energy consumption is reduced without compromising productivity

    Objectives:

    1. To reduce energy consumption without compromising productivity.
    2. To ensure USM Overall Building Energy Index (OBEI) is MS 1525:2007 compliant.
    3. To increase renewable energy generation in campus.

    The TORAY-USM Building has received the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) award for achieving an energy consumption of 61 kWh/m2/year due to its design, which incorporates long windows to facilitate natural daylight usage over electrical energy. The Toray-USM Knowledge Transfer Centre stands as evidence of the integrity and success of the university-industry relationship in elevating scientific work outcomes, including research and innovation efforts, and the connections forged through various networks to enhance the university's and the country's global reputation.

BUILT ENVIRONMENT

In USM, the built environment emphasizes eco-friendly construction, energy-efficient facilities, and green spaces, fostering a sustainable and conducive campus atmosphere.

WATER

USM prioritizes responsible water use and conservation. We employ water-saving technologies and promote conservation practices, engaging the campus community through education and awareness campaigns.

WASTE

USM emphasizes waste minimization and recycling. Our efforts include recycling facilities, awareness campaigns, and collaborations for proper waste management.

ENERGY

USM prioritizes energy sustainability through efficiency and renewable sources. As part of our effort to reduce carbon emissions, we adopt energy-saving tech, lighting, and solar panels.

CLIMATE CHANGE

USM is dedicated to climate change mitigation and adaptation. We integrate climate topics into our curriculum, conduct research, and organize awareness campaigns, seminars, and workshops.

HEALTH & WELLBEING

USM prioritizes sustainability through health and well-being initiatives by promoting physical and mental health, offering recreational facilities, and fostering a holistic and sustainable campus community.

BIODIVERSITY & ECOSYSTEM

USM emphasizes biodiversity conservation and ecosystem management in conducting research, collaborating with stakeholders, integrating biodiversity education, and practicing sustainable land use.
