Biodiversity & Ecosystem
ENSURING SUSTAINABILITY OF BIODIVERSITY & ECOSYSTEM
OUR MISSION IS TO BE STEWARDS OF OUR PLANET, DEDICATED TOWARDS PROTECTING BIODIVERSITY AND ECOSYSTEMS THROUGH RESEARCH, EDUCATION, COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES.
Approximately 40% of our ocean and 80% of the world’s forests are threatened and destroyed or irreversibly degraded by the impact of human activities, thus causing loss of habitats, biodiversity and the ecosystem services provided by them. Therefore, we are committed towards achieving goals set in SDG 14 (Life Below Water) and SD 15 (Life on Land) towards sustainably managing these important ecosystems: marine, coastal and terrestrial. Our priorities are to document and assess the value of ecological goods and services supported by these ecosystems, protect endangered species from extinction, sustainably manage agricultural activities from land degradation and desertification of forests cover, sustainably manage fisheries and farming activities from overharvesting, preserve our rich biodiversity and reduce the vulnerability of environmentally sensitive areas.
Well-known as the "University in a Garden" USM has dedicated an area specifically as the green lung of the campus, known as EcoHub. This area, which serves as a vital ecological sanctuary, is open to both residents and the public free of charge. Visitors can explore the rich biodiversity of the campus through the interactive tree map available at which provides detailed information about the various tree species found within the EcoHub and across the campus.

Environmental Responsibility
1. Sustainable Food Policy: We prioritize sustainably harvested food from aquatic ecosystems and sustainably farmed agricultural resources, ensuring responsible sourcing for our supplies in the campus.
2. Water Quality Standards: Our stringent water quality standards protect ecosystems, wildlife, and human health through responsible water discharges. We abide to stringent regulatory act set by the ministry through Malaysian Sewerage Act.
3. Plastic Waste Reduction: We actively work to reduce plastic waste on campus, contributing to a cleaner environment. We also discourage the use of single-use plastic within the campus.
4. Terrestrial and Marine Pollution Prevention: Our policies aim to prevent and reduce marine pollution, especially from land-based activities. Our hazardous waste is carefully managed by the USM OSH, unit in accordance to the USM Waste Disposal Guidelines and National regulations. Read More..
5. Ecosystem Preservation: We have plans in place to minimize alterations to aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, preserving their natural balance. Any new developement must take into consideration of the current ecosystem therein.
6. Ecosystem Health Monitoring: We regularly monitor the health of aquatic ecosystems to maintain their vitality.
7. Stewardship Programs: We support programs and incentives that encourage responsible aquatic and land stewardship practices.
8. Protecting native species and minimising the introduction of alien species: We are commited towards the conservation and protection of local native species either within the campus or outside. We also commited to minimising the introduction of alien species within the campus. These effort is done by proper research and engagement with the campus resident and the community outside.
Join us in our commitment to a sustainable and eco-friendly campus environment.

Outreach Programs
Discover our comprehensive degree programs focused on terrestrial ecosystems, freshwater ecosystems and sustainable aquatic/agricultural practices offered by various schools and research centres. We provide educational initiatives for local and national communities, covering topics like water irrigation, conservation, and responsible management. Our outreach efforts extend to natural ecosystems, fisheries, aquaculture, and tourism, emphasizing sustainability.
We also raise awareness about critical issues such as environmental conservation, overfishing and destructive fishing practices. Join us in supporting events promoting the conservation of terrestrial ecosystems, oceans, seas, rivers, and marine resources.
Through research and industry/community engagement, we actively work to preserve and expand threatened ecosystems, protecting both plant and animal biodiversity. We're committed to developing technologies and practices that help the marine industry minimize harm to aquatic and terrestrial environments. Plus, we collaborate closely with local communities to safeguard shared aquatic ecosystems. Together, we can make a positive impact on our precious natural resources.
BUILT ENVIRONMENT
In USM, the built environment emphasizes eco-friendly construction, energy-efficient facilities, and green spaces, fostering a sustainable and conducive campus atmosphere.
WATER
USM prioritizes responsible water use and conservation. We employ water-saving technologies and promote conservation practices, engaging the campus community through education and awareness campaigns.
WASTE
USM emphasizes waste minimization and recycling. Our efforts include recycling facilities, awareness campaigns, and collaborations for proper waste management.
ENERGY
USM prioritizes energy sustainability through efficiency and renewable sources. As part of our effort to reduce carbon emissions, we adopt energy-saving tech, lighting, and solar panels.
CLIMATE CHANGE
USM is dedicated to climate change mitigation and adaptation. We integrate climate topics into our curriculum, conduct research, and organize awareness campaigns, seminars, and workshops.
HEALTH & WELLBEING
USM prioritizes sustainability through health and well-being initiatives by promoting physical and mental health, offering recreational facilities, and fostering a holistic and sustainable campus community.
BIODIVERSITY & ECOSYSTEM
USM emphasizes biodiversity conservation and ecosystem management in conducting research, collaborating with stakeholders, integrating biodiversity education, and practicing sustainable land use.
