USM Strengthens Lifelong Learning Through Vocational and Executive Training
Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) continues to champion inclusive education and community empowerment through a wide range of lifelong learning initiatives. Led by the Unit for Social Innovation and Knowledge Transfer (BJIM), the university has implemented several impactful programmes that demonstrate its commitment to vocational training events (lifelong learning) that host events at university that are open to the general public, offering both executive education programmes and vocational training opportunities on ad hoc and on programmed basis.
Throughout 2024, USM organised a series of open and practical learning programmes designed to enhance employability, entrepreneurship, and community leadership. The Pintar LatihJana B40 Penang Programme delivered over 120 hours of free vocational training in entrepreneurship and technical skills, empowering participants from low-income (B40) communities to develop sustainable sources of income. Conducted in structured modules and scheduled sessions, this initiative represents a programmed basis approach to community capacity building.
Complementing these efforts, USM also conducted ad hoc vocational training events through the Vocational Employment Training for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (OKU), which offered tailored modules to strengthen job readiness and promote inclusive employment. The university’s collaboration with Yayasan Petronas under the Empower ECER Skills Programme further provided executive education short courses that enhanced the professional competencies of entrepreneurs and community members.
The LASER (Leadership in Academic Society) initiative expanded opportunities for educators, NGOs, and community leaders through open-access workshops focused on leadership, sustainability, and community development.
Through these open and inclusive training activities, USM reaffirms its commitment to advancing lifelong learning that benefits both the university and society. By integrating formal, non-formal, and informal education, USM continues to nurture a learning ecosystem that supports skills development, inclusive participation, and sustainable social progress.
