Educational Outreach Activities Beyond Campus
Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) continues to advance its mission of inclusive education and community development through sustained learning initiatives that extend far beyond the university grounds. In keeping with its role to undertake educational outreach activities beyond campus, USM implements both structured and ad-hoc programmes that combine teaching, mentoring, research exchange, and voluntary student participation to benefit schools and local communities.
On a programmed basis, USM leads the Program Anak Kita, one of the Malaysian Government’s key education-reform initiatives under the Whole-of-Nation approach. The programme provides targeted academic support and literacy interventions for students in 3,500 schools across the country. Through components such as Anak Kita: SPM 2025, Revolusi Intervensi Murid Bacaan Asas (RIMBA), and Pecutan Impian SPM 2024, the University mobilises over 540 trained student coaches and graduates as literacy mentors and project managers. These large-scale efforts enhance educational access and equity for nearly 84,000 schoolchildren nationwide, reflecting USM’s long-term commitment to collaborative outreach and capacity building in partnership with the Ministry of Education, Yayasan Hasanah, and other national agencies.
Complementing these continuous programmes are ad-hoc outreach activities that integrate experiential learning with international engagement. From 30 November to 5 December 2024, USM collaborated with Universitas Negeri Malang in Surabaya, Indonesia, for a joint initiative combining research, vocational training, and community service. The event featured a Final-Year Project Colloquium and public lectures on sustainable construction, together with a University Social Responsibility (USR) activity where students installed Biopori infiltration holes for composting and soil enrichment. These interactive sessions offered tailored demonstrations that strengthened practical learning and regional collaboration while benefiting local communities.
Through both its long-term national outreach and flexible international initiatives, USM demonstrates how higher education can create meaningful impact beyond campus, empowering learners, communities, and partners through shared knowledge, student leadership, and inclusive educational opportunities.
