Extending Education Beyond Campus: USM’s Outreach for Sustainable Community Learning
Universiti Sains Malaysia continues to champion education as a transformative tool for sustainable and inclusive development. The university’s initiatives strongly reflect the principle of “Education for SDGs in the wider community — have dedicated outreach educational activities for the wider community, which could include alumni, local residents, displaced people.”
USM’s engagement with its alumni community remains an important driver of regional education outreach. Through a courtesy visit by the North Sumatera Alumni Association of USM, alumni from Indonesia reaffirmed their commitment to advancing educational and sustainability collaborations within ASEAN. This network promotes lifelong learning and shared expertise that extend USM’s influence beyond national borders.
Working with local community, the CETREE STEM Grooming Camp 2024 brought together school students, teachers, and USM graduates to explore renewable energy and science innovation. This collaborative effort enhanced community knowledge of sustainability while inspiring younger generations to pursue scientific and environmental awareness.
In addressing the needs of displaced people and refugees, USM implemented the SDG Malaysia–UN Trust Fund Project, providing literacy and numeracy (3M) education to Orang Asli children in Pahang. This initiative supports equitable access to quality education for vulnerable groups.
Together, these outreach efforts showcase USM’s unwavering commitment to extending education for sustainable development to all members of society
