USM Events Promoting Sustainable Use of Land
Universiti Sains Malaysia continues to support and organise events that promote the conservation and sustainable utilisation of land, including forests and wild land. These initiatives raise awareness of responsible land management, biodiversity restoration, and community participation in protecting natural ecosystems.
In 2024, USM actively participated in the Program Penanaman 1 Juta Pokok Pulau Pinang, held on 22 April 2024 in conjunction with Earth Day 2024. The event, supported by the River Engineering and Urban Drainage Research Centre (REDAC) and the Engineering Campus, involved the planting of 1,500 trees, including coconut pandan and limau kasturi species. The programme encouraged sustainable land use through reforestation and habitat rehabilitation efforts, contributing to ecosystem restoration and soil conservation.
Earlier in the year, on 6 March 2024, USM collaborated with Yayasan Amal TYT Pulau Pinang and community partners to plant 50 Kelat Paya (Syzygium campanulatum) trees at Sains@USM. The initiative aimed to restore native swamp forest vegetation and enhance the ecological resilience of the campus landscape. The programme also educated participants on the importance of native tree species in maintaining soil fertility, preventing erosion, and supporting local biodiversity.
Through these hands-on events, USM demonstrates its continued commitment to sustainable land management and ecosystem preservation. By engaging students, staff, and local stakeholders, these initiatives contribute to long-term conservation and sustainable use of land for future generations.
