Ongoing Programmes Promoting Good Aquatic Stewardship Practices

Universiti Sains Malaysia through the Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies (CEMACS), continues to develop and support ongoing programmes and initiatives that promote good aquatic stewardship practices. For over 25 years, CEMACS has led long-term conservation and research efforts at Pulau Gazumbo, home to the only seagrass meadow in the Straits of Malacca. This unique ecosystem serves as a vital breeding ground for fish, improves water quality, and acts as a natural carbon sink.

CEMACS’s work goes beyond research, incorporating education, training, and community outreach to encourage responsible aquatic stewardship. In 2024, CEMACS organised a Marine Field Course on Biodiversity and Conservation for 35 students from Kolej Yayasan UEM, Selangor. The programme provided hands-on learning experiences in ecological monitoring, aquaculture, and seagrass ecosystem management. Participants practiced field techniques such as using transect lines and quadrat frames to assess seagrass density and biodiversity, deepening their understanding of sustainable marine conservation.

These educational and participatory programmes form part of CEMACS’s ongoing commitment to fostering collaboration for shared aquatic ecosystems. By engaging students, local communities, and research partners, CEMACS bridges scientific knowledge with grassroots stewardship. The sustained initiatives empower participants to become long-term advocates and protectors of marine environments, ensuring the preservation of Penang’s coastal and marine ecosystems for future generations.
