USM Supporting Clean Energy Policy Development
Universiti Sains Malaysia continues to inform and support governments in clean energy and energy-efficient technology policy development through education, research, and strategic collaboration at the local, national, regional, and global levels. These coordinated efforts demonstrate USM’s active role in advancing Malaysia’s transition toward sustainable energy systems while contributing to the broader international clean-energy agenda.
Local and National Policy Support
USM’s Centre for Education, Training, and Research in Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (CETREE) plays a central role in supporting Malaysia’s National Green Technology Master Plan (GTMP) 2017–2030. Highlighted on pages 156–159 of the GTMP, CETREE leads nationwide public-education programmes, awareness campaigns, and technical-training initiatives that directly inform policy implementation in clean energy and energy efficiency. These activities involve collaboration with local schools, community organisations, and state agencies, ensuring that sustainability education aligns with national policy objectives. By equipping teachers, students, and practitioners with practical knowledge on renewable energy and energy-saving technologies, CETREE strengthens Malaysia’s human-capital base for green-technology policy execution.
Regional and Global Engagement
At the regional and global levels, USM formalised a strategic partnership with Jinko Solar Technology Sdn. Bhd. on 3 January 2024, through a Memorandum of Understanding focused on renewable-energy research, industry innovation, and workforce development. The collaboration enhances Malaysia’s and the region’s capacity in clean-energy technology by integrating university research with global industry expertise. Through the Industry-Infused Programme managed by the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, USM produces skilled graduates capable of driving the clean-energy transition and supporting Malaysia’s New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030) to decarbonise the manufacturing sector and achieve national net-zero targets by 2050.
The partnership also facilitates knowledge exchange between Malaysia and international solar-technology leaders, reinforcing USM’s contribution to policy development and technology transfer at regional and global scales.
Through these initiatives, USM demonstrates leadership in clean-energy innovation and policy collaboration. By aligning institutional programmes with governmental frameworks and global best practices, the University actively supports the creation and implementation of clean-energy and energy-efficient-technology policies that advance both national and international sustainability goals.
