Ad Hoc Public Learning Events Open to All
Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) strengthens its commitment to inclusive and lifelong learning by organising free, ad hoc educational events that are open to the general public. These events reflect USM’s dedication to host educational events at university that are open to the general public, ensuring that learning extends beyond students and staff to benefit local communities and interested individuals. Ad hoc activities often respond to current issues, allowing USM to offer timely opportunities for the public to engage with emerging topics, expert insights and relevant discussions. By taking an open and flexible approach, USM ensures that its campus remains a vibrant space for civic dialogue, public learning and shared intellectual growth.
A prominent example of an ad hoc initiative is the Sustainability Talks: Addressing Sustainability and ESG, held on 2 October 2024 in collaboration with Yayasan Tun Sardon. This free, ad hoc public event brought together experts, policymakers, corporate leaders, students and community members to discuss Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) challenges. Participants explored practical approaches to strengthening sustainability practices across institutions and industries through interactive dialogue and shared perspectives. Events like this enhance public understanding of national development priorities and help cultivate an informed society that is aware of sustainability trends, governance expectations and the importance of responsible decision-making. Through such ad hoc public engagements, USM broadens access to knowledge while fostering a culture of continuous learning and community empowerment.

Alongside ad hoc initiatives, USM provides free, programmed educational events that take place on a recurring schedule and support long-term learning for the community. These structured activities ensure that members of the public can benefit from consistent, organised opportunities for personal development, values-based learning and leadership growth. Programmed events reinforce USM’s commitment to host educational events at university that are open to the general public, enabling wider participation in developmental programmes that are designed to nurture strong moral foundations and holistic growth. By offering repeated and well-planned sessions, USM ensures that learning is not only accessible but also sustained and impactful across longer periods.
Among these initiatives are programmes such as Program NILAI, coordinated by Pusat Transformasi Insan (PTi), which delivered multiple structured training sessions throughout 2024. Program NILAI adopts a systematic approach, integrating workshops, reflective activities and value-centred modules that cultivate ethical leadership, positive character development and organisational integrity. While the programme primarily supports internal capacity-building among USM staff, selected sessions are intentionally opened to the public to extend the benefits of value-based education to the wider community. These free, recurring programmed learning opportunities strengthen community engagement, support the development of ethical mindsets and contribute to a more informed and value-driven society. Through sustained public access to structured learning, USM demonstrates its commitment to nurturing lifelong learning that is engaging, equitable and community-centred.
